Thank you so much for this deep dive. I look forward to the next installment. I have long been exasperated with the processed/unprocessed debate, and with the people who insist that white bread from the store is evil but their homemade sourdough bread (made with the same white flour!) is marvelous and life-giving. I have just eaten a bowl of ultra-processed corn flakes in protest.
Reading this reminds me of the maintenance phase podcast where they discussed the guy who suggested everyone shops at the farmers markets. Looking forward to reading more, this part is very helpful in terms of what UPFs are. Thank you!
Laura, thank you so much for this! As a Brazilian who studied nutrition in Brazil, I can say that the fear-mongering over UPFs in the country is no joke. I don’t know what it’s more demonized, sugar or UPFs 🤦🏻♀️ I have been living in the US for several years now, and while there’s a lot of diet culture everywhere, people don’t seem to bother about UPFs as much. I believe this may be related to the fact that Brazil has a wide variety of fruits, veggies, and grains, and culturally we have more homemade meals instead of store-bought food. Anyway, I’m thankful for this discussion and look forward to reading next week’s post!
Thank you so much for this article. I've been finding the conversation around UPFs frustrating. It feels like it's shaming poorer people, time and money poor, and it confuses so much around what is processed and isn't
